Home-office desks are becoming smaller and simpler. The new desks are descended from old-fashioned writing desks and small secretaries, but they accommodate modern technology. Some designers suggest this trend is caused by a backlash against e-mail and a return to handwritten notes, but others say it is the result of better laptop computers and a desire for more attractive desks that integrate better into a multipurpose room. Laura Daily, Ballard's director of home accents, says the small desk trend began with the introduction of the Herman Miller Home collection about two years ago, after the company noticed clients were beginning to order home-office furniture for their work offices. About the same time, Daily noticed how many people were becoming addicted to beautiful stationery and pens. Phil Garrett, Hooker Furniture's import sales coordinator, says smaller desks "have constantly been the No. 1 requests coming out of the markets and visits with retailers."

USG ceiling system products are featured in an innovative art exhibit staged by The Renaissance Society and the artists' collaborative Simparch at the University of Chicago. The artists are using Frost Climaplus and Eclipse Climaplus acoustical ceiling panels, and the DX ceiling suspension system as part of an alternative exhibit called "Spec," which includes musical and sculptural elements. Spec is designed to create an experience of space as it is determined by sound. Simparch's sculptural treatment consists of a full dropped ceiling with recessed lighting and speakers. The ceiling has been constructed as a semi-circular barrel vault approximately 72 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 10 feet high. The resulting corridor-like room holds more than 80 people. Spec is being staged at Cobb Hall at the University of Chicago, and runs from September 16 through October 28. For additional information visit http://www.usg.com.
